Well, yesturday I told my friend that I wanted to start walking the walk of my Ayurvedic knowledge… and today in my home-work I came across a question in my practical home-work to design a tonifying or purifying therapy for myself.
I chose a purification therapy for myself as I feel it’s most appropriate for me right now.
What am I trying to purify? I don’t currently have any signs of Kapha imbalance, however, I do have certain tells of Vata Vikruti, including, feeling unable to sit down for long periods of time and unable to concentrate. Vitiation of Prana Vayu in the Manovahasrota.
At moments I feelings of being very intense as well. Vitiation of Sadhaka pitta of the manovahasrota… but I think If I lay off the copious amounts of warm salsa, and avoid to much direct sun and alcohal, I should improve this.
So yesturday I came up with a rough schedule of activities to bring balance to my time throughout the day and today I am making a schedule to bring balance to my constitution so that I will be at my ultimate health in mind, body and spirit for this month… and following months. As this is my home-work- I am not sure if everything is exactly right, but I am going to submit it to my teacher and then perhaps revise anything I have be wrong about.
Pitta/Vata Prakruti
Vata Purification: 5-10 days/ some tonification therapies to include.
Vata Pacifying Kitcheree/ extra cooked vegetables allowed.
I will choose from the best options below to add to my kitcheree and avoid anything from avoid list.
Vegetables that are best for Pitta/Vata are:
Avocado, bean sprouts, cauliflower, cilantro, corn, leeks, okra, onion (cooked), potato, pumpkin, seaweed, squash, tomato (sweet, vine riped.)
Most important: Avoid cabbage, chillies, hot peppers, radishes, raw onion, tomato paste and sauce.
Mental Note: I may have been using to much hot peppers in my diet as well as tomato paste/sauce in my salsas.
Best fruits: Avocada, bananas (very well ripened), lemons, limes, berries, coconut, sweet papaya, dates, figs, grapes, mango, nectarines, oranges sweet.
Avoid: Dry fruit, olives, sour fruit such as oranges, papaya, pineapple, plums.
Seeds: Coconut, pine nuts, sunflower seeds
Avoid: Peanuts
Grains: I will choose basmati rice out of the best grain choices, as I like it just as much as the other best options of cooked oats and wheat. Small amounts of quinoe, amaranth, barley, millet and rye, and rice (short or long grain) are also acceptable.
Avoid: Buckwheat, corn flour products, dry oats.
Mental Note: I may have been using to much corn flour products… nachos, totopos, tostatos, but I will restrain from eating these and the hot sauce that is so delicious on them for the next 10 days or until ama is cleared… and try to eat them only once a day, not accompanying every meal.
Oil: Best: Avacado, coconut, ghee, olive oil, sunflower.
with small amounts of almond, castor, corn, flaxseed, sesame, soy.
Avoid: Canola, lard, margarine, mustard, peanut, safflower.
Meats: I don’t eat meat and don’t need to eat fish or eggs during the next 10 days either. But if I did need to eat meat the best for me are eggs, fresh water fish, chicken (white meat).
Avoid: Shellfish, dark meat of chicken or turkey.
Best Legumes: mung beans, tofu
Small amounts (with spices such as in dhal) of aduki beans, black gram, chickpeas, kidney beans, black lentils, navy beans, pinto beans, soy beans, split peas.
Avoid: Fava beans, red and yellow lentils.
Best spices: Bay leaf, caraway, cardamom, catnip, chamomile, cilantro, coriander, cumin, dill, fennel, lemon verbena, peppermint, rosemary, saffron, spearmint, tumeric
Small amount of: Anise, basil, cinnamon, coconut, fenugreek, ginger (fresh), nutmeg, oregano, poppy seed, sage, salt, star anise, thyme.
Avoid:Asafetida, black pepper, calamus, cayenne pepper, cloves, garlic (raw), ginger (dry), horseradish, hot mustards, hyssop.
Mental Note: I may have been using to much black pepper in my diet.
Condiments: Best: None
Small amounts: Carob, Mayonnaise.
Avoid: Catsup, chocolate, tamari, vinegar.
Beverages: (taken room temperature or warm, never cold.)
Best: Chamomile tea, licorice tea, mild spice teas, milk, mint tea, water.
Small amounts of: Dilluted carrot juice, dilluted fruit juice, black or green tea, naturally flavored sodas.
Avoid: Alcohal, coffee (caffeinated and decaffeinated), soft drinks, very spicy tea, tomato juice, vegetable juices.
Mental Note: I should begin to drink more carrot and fruit juices and buy licorice tea. I began to drink coffee in January and I think I will stop again, except for small amounts in spiced, almond milk and coconut drinks which I am finding the flavor to be delicious and remind me of home. But my natural resistance to coffee the past couple of days has been confirmed that my body just wants to be in balance and coffee isn’t helping.
As far as alcohol, for the next 10 days I will also refrain from drinking any alcohol and limit my intake of any fermented beverages as well. And after, I am going to begin to be mindful of alcohal consumption on a day-to-day basis depending on how I am feeling and what other ranjasic, tamasic or fire qualities I have taken throughout the day.
Kitchari will be taken for 3 meals a day for several days until ama has cleared. (Tongue is cleared, energy is more.)
I will make this on Friday to eat until Sunday and on Sunday make another batch to eat until Tuesday and on Tuesday make another batch to eat until Thursday and on Thursday make another batch to eat until Saturday and on Saturday make another batch to eat until Tuesday and then the process should be over…
Avocado, bean sprouts, cauliflower, cilantro, leeks, onion (cooked), potato, pumpkin, seaweed, squash will be the vegetables that I will add to my Kitchari.
Takra may be consumed in between meals. (Yogurt/Water/Spices). I will try and only eat kitchari, however, having a drink like this will probably be a good idea before or after giving long therapy as it’s a physical process and I use a lot of energy. I will make sure to take it warm.
Pungent herbs to clear up ama:
ginger, asafetida, hingwastika.
I will make a ginger tea in the morning and sip on it throughout the day and will add asafetida to my kitchari.
Sunbathing for 15-20 minutes: Will do in the morning after abhyanga or at sunset time)
Walking and gentle/Vata pacifying yoga exercise: Forward bends, mindful, avoiding many backward bends, balancing practices and floor practices… focusing on moving Vayus downward. In the morning and at sunset.
Alternate nostril pranayama for subtle body.
I will practice this after sunset yoga for 15 minutes.
Warming colors and spicy, sweet aromas to calm and purify mind.
I will study in my room with yellow and gold curtains and use a misting spray of Rose, Jasmine and Rhu Kus as well as Sandlewood incense and other sweet incenses.
Chanting bija mantra Ram. I will practice this for 10 minutes before I eat.
Chanting of Gayatri for increase of agni/tejas in the morning after yoga practice before studying but only for 5 minutes as it is heating.
Mahamritunjaya to calm mind and bring healing to body. I will practice this for 10-15 minutes at night time before bed.
